Wrongful termination lawyers, what do we do? If you’ve ever been fired from a job, it’s “wrongful” to you. But, in Oklahoma there is an area of the law that can help you. After 28 years of practicing law, I can honestly call myself an expert in wrongful termination law, discrimination law and harassment law in the workplace. In an “at will” state, without a union contract or a written employment contract, you can be fired for any reason, even one based on a bad management decision, but you cannot be discriminated against, harassed at work or fired for a reason that violates “public policy”. If you are discriminated, harassed or fired due to your race, sex, religion, age, disability, ethnic background, pregnancy or because you had a workers’ comp claim, the law may protect you. You might be able to get an order reinstating your job or a money award to compensate for lost wages, benefits and mental suffering. Everyone knows, job loss causes mental distress and personal upheaval. There are some short statutes of limitation that apply to sex, race, age, etc., discrimination. A charge of discrimination must be on file with the right government agency within only 300 days of the offending act.
